EMDR

I am a qualified EMDR practitioner and able to integrate this into long term work or as a shorter more targeted  intervention dependent on what it is you wish to work on.

EMDR is an increasingly popular approach to working with trauma which uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, sounds or tapping) to access the brain's natural healing capacity to process traumatic memories. It was initially designed as a treatment for PTSD but is increasingly used for other difficulties (including, anxiety, depression and complex PTSD) which may have their root in problematic memories.

If you think of your brain as a factory, one of its jobs is to process life events and so they can become memories. Most events are of a size and nature that the factory can make sense of and store your experiences in an organised way- we may feel distress but eventually this feeling is worked through and over time we are able to live with what has happened. When we have a traumatic experience the experience is too big for the factory to process and it becomes blocked and breaks down. This is why we get things like flashbacks, find ourselves chronically dysregulated or responding disproportionately to events in the present. EMDR breaks down the blockage so the factory can process the event, therefore reducing the distress it causes and allowing it to be stored as a normal memory. This is done using a procedure that accesses the memory whilst stimulating each side of the brain using eye movements, taps or tones.

EMDR can be conducted online or in person.
